"We are sharing a redacted image of the actual email we received from the Makeda Nichols State Farm office regarding a homeowners policy non-renewal so others can see it for themselves. The email was so poorly written, vague, and lacking basic identifying information that we initially believed it could be a spoof or phishing message. It did not include a policy number, named insured, or reference to any formal notice, which is alarming given the seriousness of a homeowners policy non-renewal. We later learned that official non-renewal notices come directly from underwriting, not via informal agency emails, and we did in fact receive a formal mailed notice from underwriting weeks later. This raised serious concerns about how this situation was handled and communicated. We contacted Makeda Nichols directly the next business day to confirm legitimacy and understand next steps. Rather than offering clarification or assistance, she was rude and dismissive and told us, in substance, to just shop for a new homeowners policy. When we raised concerns about the quality and legitimacy of the email, Makeda Nichols attempted to explain it away by saying the sender speaks Russian and that a relative sometimes works in the office and sends emails. No proof of prior underwriting notice was provided, and we were effectively left with only about three weeks to secure new homeowners insurance for an elderly, disabled homeowner. A week later, after we found a licensed and bonded roofing company, we were told that if we signed a contract to replace the roof, the office would send that documentation to underwriting. We did so immediately, but the Makeda Nichols office never submitted it. There was no follow-through or advocacy. State Farm promises, “Like a good neighbor, State Farm is there.” In our case, Makeda Nichols was not there when it mattered most. We strongly caution others not to assume this office will help you when a policy is at risk or when you need the assistance you're paying insurance for. She is not a good neighbor. In addition to this review, we will be submitting a formal complaint to State Farm corporate and also to the Alabama Department of Insurance (ALDOI) as well."
